Can Darkest Dungeon 2 quench the itch that fans have had for the previous 5 years with its Early Access release only on Epic Games (for the time being)?
The Nightmare Roadtrip is a collection of short stories about a road trip across
While the first Darkest Dungeon had players recruiting and training a stable of would-be heroes in order to rescue their beloved hamlet, Darkest Dungeon 2 requires you to commit to a fixed squad that you’ll be riding on in a stagecoach to halt the apocalypse.
This sequel to the gothic turn-based strategy RPG focuses significantly more on the characters than the original, concentrating on how your band of misfits interact with one another—and piss each other off—while on an epic mission.
Instead of having one continuous, open-ended narrative, Darkest Dungeon 2 doubles down on its roguelike characteristics. After committing to your characters for a run, you’ll go on a hellish stagecoach trip through villages, inns, and hordes of adversaries intent on putting a stop to your quest for good. Managing your tension and regulating your heroes’ emotions is crucial to your success, just as it was in the original game.
Throughout the random interactions and events that your group will face, you’ll have several opportunities to learn more about each character’s past, form relationships amongst the party members, or break them. Your heroes may swiftly come to detest one other, flinging insults and cultivating animosity among themselves, depending on your decisions… much like on a typical cross-country road journey, but with the stakes turned up to 11.
Fear not if your run is cut short due to external reasons or infighting; each unsuccessful run still offers you some progress toward unlocking additional characters or increasing the abilities and stats of your present stable.
