NFL Analyst Roasts Patriots for Stephon Gilmore Trade

Patriots trade Stephon Gilmore to the Buffalo Bills for a third-round draft pick, which is far better than what they would have received in an earlier deal.

The “stephon gilmore trade” is a recent trade that was made by the New England Patriots. NFL Analyst Mike Freeman says that the move was not good for the team.

Let’s not sugarcoat it: the New England Patriots’ choice–which ultimately implies Bill Belichick’s decision to trade Stephon Gilmore was a terrible one–was a horrible one. Worse, the Patriots only received a sixth-round selection from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for the former Defensive Player of the Year.

Belichick is not immune to rebuke, and members of the media are letting him know about his latest gaffe. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe sent out a Bitmoji-fueled comparison tweet, highlighting the very realistic return the Philadelphia Eagles received for trading Joe Flacco to the New York Jets alongside the Gilmore return.

While Volin was instrumental in putting the dreadful transaction into perspective, he isn’t the only one blaming Belichick for the blunder.

Bill Belichick was the deal’s biggest loser.

Belichick was one of the biggest losers in the trade that sent Gilmore to the Panthers, according to USA Today’s Nate Davis, and this was his rationale.

Gilmore’s contract difficulties have been lingering for almost a year. New England handed him a $5 million increase in 2020 after his defensive MVP performance, but it simply helped to push the financial can down the road, as he was set to earn less than $6 million in 2021. The quad problem undoubtedly hindered any trade negotiations in the summer, but a 2023 Day 3 selection for a player of his talent doesn’t seem like much. This also serves as a reminder that most players, no matter how good they are – Brady, Gilmore, Richard Seymour, Randy Moss, and the list goes on – leave New England with a sour taste in their mouths, which could be a problem for Belichick’s free agent recruiting efforts in the future now that Brady is no longer around to serve as Lombardi Trophy catnip.

Davis makes an excellent argument, but it seems to have been disproven this offseason. Many players leave New England with grudges, yet they still come to Foxborough to join with Belichick and the Patriots this summer.

Perhaps Belichick’s separation with Gilmore, along with less-than-Patriots finishes in 2020 and a sub-500 record in 2021, will be enough to tip the scales against him.

Meanwhile, injury has decimated the Patriots’ secondary.

Because of a shoulder injury, Patriots cornerback Johnathan Jones is out for the season, but New England was already poor at the position before Belichick sold Gilmore.

Now, the Patriots seem to be scurrying for secondary depth, working out a variety of cornerbacks after letting an outstanding one walk out the door for a sixth-round choice. Despite the fact that Belichick is a legend, this is not a good thing.

J.C. Jackson, Myles Bryant, Joejuan Williams, and Jalen Mills are desperately needed by the Patriots to make everyone forget what occurred. That is a difficult job.
