Following Ricky Rubio’s horrific ACL injury, the Cleveland Cavaliers have an immediate need for a backcourt player. While it may be tempting to re-engage the Philadelphia 76ers in trade negotiations for Ben Simmons, the Cavs don’t want to risk giving up a lot of potential assets at a time when they’re just getting started to construct a more regular postseason challenger.
Unfortunately, Cleveland should resist the urge to make a big splash for Simmons and instead go for Dennis Schroder, a very effective guard.
Ricky Rubio was a standout performer with the Cavaliers at guard.

The Cavaliers have suffered a huge loss with Rubio’s absence.
The Spanish guard was having a fantastic season on the court. Rubio averaged 13.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 34 games. He relieved a lot of playmaking strain on Darius Garland while also increasing his defensive energy. He also shown experienced leadership by encouraging new players such as Evan Mobley.
With Rubio out of the picture, the Cavs have a major vacancy at guard. Collin Sexton hasn’t played since suffering a meniscus injury in November. Cedi Osman and Dean Wade are forwards who can’t produce much offense, while Isaac Okoro is more of a defensive-minded wing than a guard.
To fill the vacuum left by Rubio, Cleveland sorely needs to get another ball-handler and playmaker. Given their previous interest in Ben Simmons, the Cavaliers may attempt to trade for him.

The Cavaliers have been mentioned as a possible destination for Ben Simmons. Indeed, the divisive 76ers player may be a valuable asset for Cleveland.
Simmons would elevate an already strong defensive unit to new heights. With both Mobley and Jarrett Allen lurking in the paint, his tenacious perimeter defense would definitely give main ball-handlers nightmares.
Furthermore, Simmons’ ability to grab rebounds and initiate breaks in transition might offer the Cavs more speed and energy on offense, particularly considering how effectively their bigs run the floor. While his shooting limitations restrict his ability to spread the floor, he and Allen would be a nightmare for opposing defenses at the dunker position.
Cleveland also possesses youthful assets, such as Sexton, who might appeal to the 76ers, as well as draft money and pick swaps. Is it really prudent for a club that is still laying the groundwork to give up so much for a guy with a slightly restricted offensive ceiling?
The Cavaliers might be better off spending their money on less expensive backcourt additions.

Cleveland would get an All-NBA player and a perennial Defensive Player of the Year contender in Ben Simmons. But he’d eat into the Cavs’ wallets, both in terms of draft selections and the money owing to him over the next several seasons.
Why not go after Dennis Schroder of the Boston Celtics, who is nearly likely to go before the NBA trade deadline?
Schroder isn’t a very good shooter. On 4.4 attempts per game, he’s hitting just under 33% of his triples. However, as a slashing guard, he’s a capable facilitator (4.7 assists). With Cleveland’s massive frontcourt of Allen, Mobley, and Lauri Markkanen, his ability to get to the cup could make him a terror in pick-and-roll situations.
Furthermore, Schroder will be significantly less expensive. He’s on a deal that’s about to expire, and he won’t get nearly as much in terms of draft money and young talent as Simmons.
If the Cavaliers are under pressure to find another franchise cornerstone, dealing for Simmons may be a good option. However, someone like Schroder is a better choice if they want a great scoring guard who can create plays off the bounce and operate as a temporary option.
