The Detroit Lions Are in Prime Position to Gamble on a Much-Needed Weapon for Struggling Jared Goff

The Detroit Lions are one of the most interesting teams in this year’s draft. They have a high supply of picks and Jared Goff is still available for them to pick up at no risk. Experts say that they should trade back down multiple times, but what if they took Goff? It would be an exciting change for the team, giving their struggling quarterback hope again.

The “jared goff news” is the Detroit Lions are in prime position to gamble on a much-needed weapon for struggling Jared Goff.

In 2021, the Detroit Lions have had a difficult time. Dan Campbell’s first season as a head coach has been a disaster, with his club starting the season 0-8.

At this moment, the Lions are the only club in the NFL without a victory, and things aren’t looking good. Following a bye week, the Lions’ next three games are against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day.

In the case of the Browns, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. may have provided Jared Goff and the Lions’ struggling offense with a much-needed weapon.

Odell Beckham Jr. has been released by the Cleveland Browns.

After a swiftly increasing controversy between the two sides, the Browns severed company with OBJ. Baker Mayfield’s apparent failure to deliver the ball to his top receiver was chastised in a video uploaded on social media by Beckham’s father earlier this week. Baker “simply doesn’t want to get Odell the ball” and “either he’s hating on Odell, or he just doesn’t want him shining,” according to a comment on the article.

Beckham Jr. missed practice the following day and was given an excused absence. He also did not show up for practice on Thursday, and head coach Kevin Stefanki allegedly informed the players that the wideout was no longer a member of the team.

Beckham Jr. was expected to be released shortly, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed on Friday morning that Cleveland would definitely release the wideout, putting him on waivers.

“After careful deliberation, internal discussions, and meetings with Odell and his representatives, we’ve concluded that it is in the best interests of all parties involved that Odell no longer plays for the Cleveland Browns,” stated Browns general manager Andrew Berry. “We appreciate all of his efforts and accomplishments while in Cleveland, but we’ve come to the conclusion that moving on as a club without Odell is the best option.” We’re nearing the end of the process of releasing Odell, and we wish him luck in his future endeavors.”

Beckham Jr. will make his NFL debut with the Detroit Lions.

By the way, the Lions have first preference on waivers, were looking for receivers last week, and might move him next summer if he performs well for them. https://t.co/bmL4ra8rUq

Who’s first in line for a waiver claim in the NFL? You guessed correctly. It’s the Lions on the field.

The fact that Detroit has the poorest record in the league has already been established. While that’s normally a bad categorization, it does enable the Lions to choose individuals from the trash pile ahead of the rest of the league.

The waiver wire comes with the proviso that players on it were generally cut for a cause. There are, of course, exceptions. It isn’t necessarily due to bad performance or a lack of skill. There are situations when a player isn’t a good match. Whitney Mercilus, who was released by the Houston Texans and then signed with the Green Bay Packers, is an example of this. The Texans’ defensive system had altered, and he was no longer relevant.

However, when it comes to OBJ, the Lions’ calculation is a little more complicated.

Without a question, he’s a gifted player, but he also comes with a lot of baggage.

The first is the manner in which he departed Cleveland. The two parties did not have a pleasant divorce. He was even labeled a malcontent by one unnamed teammate, and it’s not like his performance on the field allowed him much wiggle space to begin with.

While Beckham is as physically talented as any wideout you’ll ever see, he only caught 17 receptions for the Browns this season, for a total of 232 yards. In 2021, he didn’t catch a touchdown pass for Cleveland, and he made it obvious that Mayfield was the problem, not him.

The reality is that his show has been teetering on the edge of a precipice for years.

OBJ isn’t the same wide receiver that wowed the league with his outstanding one-handed grab with the New York Giants. During his five seasons with the Giants, he had 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns. He only had 114 receptions for 1,586 yards and seven scores during his career with Cleveland. Since being moved in 2019, he has only appeared in 28 games and has never been able to connect with his quarterback.

Even though Mayfield and OBJ were friends, they couldn’t work it out on the field, according to ESPN’s inside look at how it all went down.

“Odell is in his head,” a former Browns club source claimed, “and [Mayfield] is pushing every time [Beckham] is near.” “Odell knocks him off his feet… It all goes worse from there because Baker is indecisive.”

What does it matter if the Lions lose? Take a chance and see what happens.

Beckham Jr. could benefit from a change of environment. He did have a solid debut season in Cleveland (1,035 yards and four touchdowns), and he’d be entering a scenario in Detroit with zero expectations.

Things can only get better for the Lions, and if they sign OBJ, he’ll be the team’s best offensive weapon right away.

Kalif Raymond, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Khadarel Hodge are among the wide receivers in Detroit’s offense. Not only would most NFL fans have to Google each of those guys just to be aware of their existence, but they only have two touchdown receptions between them, both of which belong to Raymond.

The Lions’ offense is one of the worst in the league, averaging 16.8 points per game, and Goff is one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. Although he has passed for 1,995 yards, he only has eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The Lions’ offense averages barely five yards per offensive play, putting them at the bottom of the league.

What does Detroit have to lose at this point?

In order to achieve at least one victory, the Lions really need a jolt of adrenaline, which a brilliant player like OBJ may give. Having a deep threat like Beckham Jr. might help Goff get back on track.

Yes, he entails some dangers. For a rookie coach attempting to develop a culture and a locker room, he’s also a bit of a risk. However, going winless would be even worse for the Lions, and that is a distinct possibility.

The Lions have the first opportunity, and they should go with Beckham Jr.

ESPN and Pro Football Reference provided the statistics.
